Berlin Black are a glam/goth/rock outfit, created by Chris Tuke (ex Screaming Banshee Aircrew) and consisting of Thomas MacLean (drums), Jo Violet (bass), Chris (vocals/keyboards) and myself (guitar). So far we’ve released 3 EPs (The Only Ones, Burn It Down and It’s Only Natural) and a full-length album.
In 2010 Chris was working on tracks alongside his duties in SBA, and under considerable pressure from mutual friends started making Berlin Black and the Shades of Grey a reality – with an eye on early Bowie and T-Rex, mixed with the poppiness of The Cure and a slew of 80s power pop bands like Flesh For Lulu and the Psychedelic Furs.
He approached me to play guitar as we were aware of each other through the gigging circuit and even though I was playing with GLASS at the time, I felt that project was nearing it’s end so I jumped at the chance to moonlight as Mick Ronson to his Bowie.
It quickly became apparent that being “just” the guitar player was very freeing, and a lot of fun. I had the chance to really work on my playing and performance without the hassle of managing the band, or having to undertake lead vocals at the same time. Plus, my bandmates were hardworking, talented and great to be around so the interminable travelling and waiting around that comes as part and parcel of band life was more enjoyable than it otherwise could have been. I shelved GLASS which left me more time to rehearse, gig and record with Berlin Black.
Over the past couple of years we’ve played a lot of fantastic gigs, supporting huge bands from the goth/dark scene and playing in Europe to a great reception.
Our debut album was released in late 2015 to great reviews, and I’m really enjoying being a guitarist full-time. Visit the website for more information.
